20 of the 128 questions are in the senior exemption set — if you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20+ years, you only need to know these 20. They're clearly marked.

What actually happens at your citizenship interview

Understanding the format removes anxiety. Here's exactly what to expect on the day.

Oral, not written

A USCIS officer asks questions out loud. You answer verbally. There is no written exam, no multiple-choice sheet, and no computer. The only writing involved is one English sentence.

20 questions, 12 to pass

The officer asks up to 20 civics questions from the 128-question bank. Answer 12 correctly and you pass. The officer stops as soon as you pass or fail — you may not be asked all 20.

English reading and writing

You will read one sentence aloud in English and write one sentence. Applicants who qualify under the 65/20 senior rule are exempt from the English portion entirely.

One retest if you fail

If you fail, USCIS schedules a retest within 60 to 90 days. Pass the retest and your application continues. Fail the retest and your N-400 is denied — but you can reapply.

Special rules if you qualify

Age and length of residency can significantly reduce your test requirements.

65 / 20 Rule
Age 65+ · 20 years as permanent resident

Study only 20 questions instead of 128. Officer asks 10, you need 6 correct. English test fully waived.

50 / 20 Rule
Age 50+ · 20 years as permanent resident

Your naturalization interview can be conducted in your native language.

55 / 15 Rule
Age 55+ · 15 years as permanent resident

Your naturalization interview can be conducted in your native language.

Eligibility is determined by USCIS. Consult an immigration attorney for guidance on your specific situation.

Built for every state in the union

Four USCIS civics questions have answers that change based on where you live: your U.S. Senators, your U.S. Representative, your Governor, and your state capital. These are also the questions most people skip when studying. They assume they'll remember. They often don't.

  • Type your state's answer — senators, representative, governor, and state capital
  • Direct links to senate.gov, house.gov, and usa.gov so you confirm current officials before your interview
  • Location-based questions are clearly flagged so you know to verify before your interview
  • Memory anchors throughout — short mnemonics to help names stick, not just facts

Common questions about the U.S. citizenship test

Accurate answers based on official USCIS materials and Federal Register notices.

How many questions are on the 2025 citizenship test?+
The 2025 USCIS civics test has 128 questions in the official study bank (Form M-1778). At your naturalization interview, the officer asks up to 20 questions orally. You must answer 12 correctly to pass — a 60% threshold, the same pass rate as the old test.
Which version of the civics test will I take — 100 or 128 questions?+
It depends on when you filed Form N-400. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you take the new 2025 test: 128-question bank, 20 questions asked, 12 correct to pass. If you filed before October 20, 2025, you take the 2008 test: 100-question bank, 10 questions asked, 6 correct to pass.
Is the citizenship test multiple choice?+
No. The civics test is entirely oral. A USCIS officer asks questions out loud and you answer verbally. There is no written exam, no multiple-choice sheet, and no computer test. The English portion requires you to read one sentence aloud and write one sentence — that is the only written component.
What happens if you fail the citizenship test?+
USCIS will schedule a retest within 60 to 90 days. You only need to retake the portion or portions you failed — civics, English reading, or English writing. If you fail the retest as well, your Form N-400 application is denied. You can reapply, but you must start the process over.
Can you retake the citizenship test?+
Yes, once. Every applicant gets one retest opportunity after a failed attempt. Over 94% of applicants ultimately pass including retests, according to USCIS naturalization test performance data.
How hard is the 2025 citizenship test?+
Harder than the 2008 version. The question bank grew from 100 to 128 questions, adding 28 new questions focused on history and government. The interview now asks 20 questions instead of 10, requiring 12 correct answers instead of 6. The pass percentage stays at 60%, but there is significantly more material to study.
What is the pass rate for the citizenship test?+
Over 92% of applicants pass the civics portion on their first attempt, according to USCIS naturalization test performance data. The overall pass rate including retests is 94.4%. Consistent practice with all 128 questions is the most reliable way to be in that majority.
Are there exemptions from the citizenship test for seniors?+
Yes. The 65/20 rule: if you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 or more years, you study only 20 special civics questions instead of 128. The officer asks 10 of those, and you need 6 correct. The English language test is also waived. The 50/20 and 55/15 rules allow the interview to be conducted in your native language.
How do I study for the 2025 citizenship test?+
Study all 128 official USCIS civics questions from Form M-1778. Focus on weak areas — questions you miss repeatedly. CitizenIQ uses an adaptive practice engine that automatically identifies your weak spots across all 7 civics categories and prioritizes them in each session.
What is the N-400?+
